Al-Qaeda Statement of responsibility for Madrid Attacks
13th March 2004

On 11th March 2004, exactly two and a half years (911 days) after the September 11 attacks, ten of thirteen bombs exploded in Madrid, blowing apart four commuter trains. Over 200 civilians were killed and 1400 injured.

On the 13th of March, a video of "a man dressed like an Arab (and speaking) Arabic with a Moroccan accent" who claimed to be al-Qaeda's spokesman in Europe claimed responsibility for the attack. A translation of the tape was released by the Spanish Government, and appeared on the cover of
The Australian on 15th March 2004. The translation follows:

We declare our responsibility for what occurred in Madrid, exactly 2 1/2 years after the attacks in New York and Washington. It is a response to your collaboration with the criminals Bush and his allies.

This is a response to the crimes that you have caused in the world and specifically in Iraq and in Afghanistan. And there will be more, inshallah (God willing).

You love life and we love death, which gives you an example of what the Prophet Mohammed said that if you do not stop your injustices, the blood will flow more and more, and these attacks will seem very small with what could occur with what you call terrorism.

This is a message from the military spokesman for al-Qa'ida in Europe.
