Born in North Sumatra on 5th August 1958, Ka'ban gained a masters degree at the Bogor Institute of Agriculture in 1990. He later became secretary-general of the Islamist Crescent Star Party (PBB). Ka'ban regularly lectures in several universities in Jakarta and Bogor. However, he has no specific educational background in forestry. Ka'ban was active in a number of Islamic organisations before joining PBB, which only gained two seats in the House of Representatives in the 4th April 2004 legislative elections. Ka'ban's appointment is seen as another instance of Yudhoyono unnecessarily give to the Islamists (see APR 64) , whom, it seems, he does not fully understand. |
